Dr Evil is a master of the understatement. But trial riders soon learn to decode remarks like, “… there’s a bit of a climb…” into “it’s a mountain.” And “lunch is only a few km away” usually means “you’ll be on your bikes for another hour”.

Breakfast saw the trial riders wearing an extra layer of clothing this morning. Word had spread of the long downhill pass right after the start. Remembering the frozen digits yesterday, they were leaving nothing to chance.

Clear skies! That’s what trial riders’ Blackberrys said this morning. So all was on schedule and back to the 6am breakfast / 7am start routine. But clear skies don’t always mean warm air.

“It’s raining!” These were the happy words of the trial riders as they wakened this morning hearing the rain outside.

If anyone was expecting to hear graphic details of sore, punished backsides after yesterday’s 12km stretch of railway track, they were disappointed.

This morning kicked off with the traditional handing out of name boards. Each rider gets a nickname, written in bold letters and it is usually a jibe at some misdemeanour on previous trial rides.

Thanks to the District Deputy Director of Public Transport for Cape Winelands District Municipality, Mr. Bevan Kurtz, the learners in the broader area of the Winelands District are now more visible to the passing motorist.

The annual Absa Cape Epic pre-event Rider Info Evenings will be held in Sandton and Cape Town during the month of September.
